There are a lot of different reasons why you might want to use a silicone baking mat rather than spraying the pan, or using parchment paper. Those should be explored further in other articles. But suffice to say when you want a reusable nonstick baking surface that reduces the amount of browning on the bottom. Silicone is the go to material. So obviously when we are talking about buying something that we are going to reuse over and over, we want to make sure we are getting the best equipment. To help you decide I tried at 3 different options and reviewed them all for you!
1. Amazon Basics Silicone Baking Mat – 2 pack ($13.99)
These mats are great for a few different reasons. For one thing they are good quality, they feel very sturdy. They are also slightly heavy so they don’t slide around when you aren’t expecting. They clean well by hand and you can put them in the top shelf of the dish washer which is super handy! I think one of the best features about them though is they are pretty cheap, coming in at $7 a piece although I have seen them on sale for as low as $4.50 a piece, which is a great deal! People have said not to use them at 400 degrees, even though they are supposedly rated to 480 so if you are baking things that require that heat, make sure you keep it in mind.
2. Silpat Premium Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat ($24.95)
Okay so these are Cooks Illustrated’s top pick and honestly I can see why. These mats are great, they are super durable. They are actually made with a fiberglass/silicone mesh. You know the material they make racecars bodies out of. How cool is that! And that’s not just for looks also, fiberglass is a super strong, and is very good at distributing heat. The only reason why I might not recommend these to everyone is that they are pricy, at 3 times as expensive as the amazon ones. I have seen them on sale for as low as $10 so sales do exist! One more thing to mention, some people have been reporting that they are getting cheap knockoffs, so do some checking when you get it to verify!
3. Velesco Silicone Baking Mats – 3 pack ($16.95)
These mats are very interesting, they are also made with a fiberglass silicone mesh. That’s the same material as the silpat ones are. However these are 1/3 the price. There are some reviews that they don’t stand up to heat and retain some of the soap taste so keep that in mind. I haven’t had that experience but just be warned.
Best Silicone Baking Mat
So in my opinion the best baking mat to get is the Velesco silicone mats. At 1/3 the price of the silpat ones it makes it hard to recommend the silpat ones. However I do think the silpat ones are higher quality and will probably last longer. At any rate all silicone mats are great and will improve your baking a lot! So purchase which ever one suits you best and get baking!
