Surprisingly I’m not the biggest fan of cake, I think it’s the lack of texture variety. However I am a fan of coffee cake, it’s got tons of different flavors and textures from the toppings. The crunch and the cinnamon really break up what to me would be a dull cake and make it awesome. Today we are looking at 5 different recipes to analyze.
The recipes we are looking at are:
- Easy Coffee Cake by Lil Luna
- Best Ever Coffee Cake Recipe by Sweet and Savory Meals
- Easy Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake by cakes cottage
- Cinnamon Coffee Cake by Sugar Spun Run
- Shelia’s Coffee Cake by A dash of Sanity
I used the servings that each recipe says that it produces, but to be honest I’m a little skeptical of Sugar Spun Run’s which said it made 24 servings, but I’m not going to judge until I make it myself! Also as some of the recipes didn’t include icing, I left off the icing in each calculation. However if there were other things in the recipe I included those.
Without further delay the costs of each recipe
- Easy Coffee Cake – $5.36 / $.36 per serving
- Best Ever Coffee Cake Recipe – $18.34 / $1.15 per serving
- Easy Cinnamon Roll Coffee Cake – $6.31 / $.45 per serving
- Cinnamon Coffee Cake – $8.11 / $.34 per serving
- Shelia’s Coffee Cake – $5.74 / $.48 per serving
Now oh my goodness, that coffee cake by Sweet and Savory meals is in a league of its own in terms of cost. That number made me do a double take, and re-look at that recipe for sure! So it turns out that the Best Ever Coffee Cake, has a cheesecake layer in it, so in a way you are getting two deserts in one? Maybe? Excluding that there is something else interesting in Shelia’s coffee cake in that it uses a box mix, and an instant pudding. Now say what you will about box cakes and instant puddings, I think it’s really interesting that the coffee cake by Lil Luna is cheaper than it. Goes to show that it may not always be cheaper to buy a box mix.
Now generally there are few major factors in the coffee cakes, The biggest contributors to cost are butter, flour, and sugar. There are two recipes that include cream cheese, which actually is the most expensive ingredient in all the recipes that include it. I think that the cream cheese makes the cake more moist, and more luxurious tasting. But of course you pay a cost for that. Potentially using an oil like the other recipes could be a good way to get that moistness at a lower cost.
